Be in Control

German shepherds are dominant dogs. You need to assert yourself as the leader or he will take control. It is important that your dog knows who is in charge or you can never have a good relationship with him.

Positive Reinforcement

One of the simplest ways to training a German shepherd is through positive reinforcement. Every time your dog displays a positive behavior, reward him with a treat or toy. He will soon find out that he won't receive anything if he does something you do not like.

Consistency

Many German shepherd owners underestimate how much time and attention they need to give to be efficient in training their dog. You need to be consistent, you can't be constantly changing rules if you expect to see progress. Also don't say "Here Buddy!" one time and "Come boy!" the next time. This will confuse him and slow down your progress.

Don't Hit Them

This is not the way to teach your dog right from wrong, especially for basic training. Violence will only install fear into them, not obedience. It is considered animal cruelty and is not the right way to effectively train your dog. It can make your dog act aggressive back to you and others.

Grooming

German shepherds do shed often, so it is important that you take good care of them. You should brush them daily to help cut down on the amount of shedding and to keep their coat clean. They only need baths occasionally to keep from drying out their skin, and should be fed quality foods to avoid any other issues.
