A Dog Named Sioux - Part One

By Angela Baden

My daughter has a dog named Sioux. Sioux is a beautiful shiny Black Labrador Retriever. She is a sweet gentle soul with much love inside of her. When my daughter first rescued her as a puppy, she had been terribly abused. She was nervous and afraid of loud noises and any sudden moves. She had difficulty trusting anyone for a time. She had been so abused that she would become so nervous; she would relieve herself on the carpet when she came into contact with any man. That included my the brothers of her owner, her father and any of her male friends.

She would get severe anxiety attacks when my daughter went to work and whine and cry for hours until she was tired and just wiped out. There was a long period of constant care and attention for her to feel calm and comfortable. My daughter patiently and painstakingly took time to play with Sioux and give her lots of love and attention. Sioux soon became a valued member of our family.

My daughter had another black lab, Cheyenne. She helped a lot. Sioux was totally comfortable, trusting and playful with the older dog who was very patient with the little puppy that invaded her home. They had great times together. At least, Sioux did. Sometimes, Cheyenne would try to hide from her; however, Sioux would always find her and make her play. They were good friends. When Cheyenne died a few years later, Sioux was very sad, however, again, with the care and love of my daughter, she overcame her grief.

After many, many months of special care and love, Sioux finally became calm and more trusting. She began to feel comfortable around people. The Labrador inside her always made her loving and sweet with a warm wonderful disposition. Then, as now, she touched the hearts of everyone who met her. She even eventually got to love and trust the men who came into her life. She greets everyone with joy and loves to lick your face. She became a very happy and satisfied dog with her funny quirks and ways of behaving.

As she grew older, she loved going out on walks with people. It was quite a challenge to walk with her. She was always happy and ready to run. Of course, running with her in the neighborhood meant using one of the leashes that let the dog run free and then you could pull her back when you had to. However, when she walked with me, you were hard pressed to decide who was doing the leading and who was walking, or running, whom. She was fun, though. She enjoyed it so much. And, she was and remains a bundle of laughs. She enjoys her life and bounds through it with joy and total abandon.
