Crate Training is the Ultimate Tool

By Richard Cross Terris

The crate can be an extremely powerful training tool for a puppy. It has to be used correctly, but if it is then you'll find it'll make your training a lot easier. There are many mistakes people make when trying to crate train a dog, but more on that later.

1. With a crate you can create a safe environment where the puppy feels comfortable. Not only will this make your dog happy, but it'll also help when you start putting it in the car. If you can travel with the dog in the crate, it is much more likely to feel secure.

2. Crate training helps a lot when house training. Dogs rarely go to the toilet in their own bed, so if your dog feels comfortable in the crate you can put it there whenever you can't keep an eye on it.

3. Crates can also help if your dog has anxiety problems as they'll immediately feel safe inside it.

Of course, to achieve these benefits you must crate train the right way. Dogs of all ages can be crate trained, so it's never too late to start, although it may take longer for older dogs to accept the crate. Here is the number one big mistake people make when using a crate....

Never send your dog to the crate for punishment. Ever. If you do, before long negative thoughts will be associated with it and the dog will no longer feel safe there and all the benefits will be ruined!

The crate is only as good as the trainer though, so it's vital you know exactly how to crate train a dog - especially if potty or house training. To find out more about house training in general please visit dog and puppy house training.
