Adopting a Wonderful Little Best Friend

By Carolyn Roome

I had lost my precious little Falcore, a tea cup poodle, about 7 years ago and it took me until about a year ago to get over his passing. I really loved that little pooch and missed him very much. But it came time that I share my love with another little dog and I started searching for the right one. I had wanted for a long time if I ever got another small dog, a little silky Yorkie. I knew I did not want a little one from a pet store because of the treatment they and the parents were getting. So I decided to check into getting a Dog Mill Rescue.

I searched for about 5 months and decided that I would put in for an adoption of a little silky Yorkie. I started checking around and found out that there were all types of rescues groups out there and they even specialized in certain breeds. I went to North Shore Animal League America website and put in my application for a little girl. I got a phone call from a lady in Trinidad Colorado, Conni, telling me that she had a little girl and her name was Katie, she is 2 years old and weighs about 4 pounds. She sent me pictures of her and I immediately fell in love with her. We would have to wait about 2 weeks to get her, because she was going in to be spayed. I asked what her circumstances were and what needs did she have. She told me that they had gotten 2 littler from her before she was even 2 years old and that she was alive only for breeding purposes, she had 2 cesareans from both litters and they were going to get rid of her because cesareans cost too much. There were no other needs except lots of love. She also told me that I would have to have a home visit to make sure that the little dog would have a good life with the family that gets her. I agreed and the following weekend we had a visit. I was very impressed with the way they do the adoptions. They gave my husband and I the go ahead for adopting little Katie. Boy I am glad she is fixed, she is so small and cute!

We went and picked up Katie on a Saturday, we had to drive 200 miles to get her, and my husband and I were so excited! We arrive at the place to meet her and when we walked in all I could see was this adorable little face peeking out of a pet pack. I was handed her and she came right to me shaking and wondering what is going on. My husband melted, his face showed so much love for that little girl. We then went and got some food, chewy and water for her and proceeded home.

On the way home we had brought a towel for her to lay on in the middle console, she laid for about an hour on my lap and then she wanted to look around. She was so happy and not shaking now and she was starting to enjoy the ride home, she finally fell asleep on the console. We got home and brought her in the house, we put her down so she could check out the place and see where she can go. She went through every part of that house, and then she came to me while I was sitting in a chair and wanted to be held. I picked her up and she sighed and lay next to me.

Ever since then she has been a true member in the family. She has her bed above our pillows, she has a robe to wear at night, she has a coat mommy made just for her with all the pretty little designs, she goes shopping with us at the local grocery store, Wal-Mart, and even goes visiting with the family. She is never alone and is loved so deeply.

She now tells me when I need to be in the office and working in the morning. She stands at the door till I go in and then she goes to her chair with her favorite blanket and lies down while I work. In the evening after dinner and our ice cream desert, she comes to the chair where I am sitting and acts like she wants picked up. I go to pick her up and she runs to the bedroom, which is her way of saying it is time to go to bed. On her walk every day, daddy usually takes her and he goes a different way than mommy does and sometimes that confuses her, but she is glad to take a walk.

She is a great door bell and tells me when even a mouse crosses the patio! We are working on what she needs to bark at, neighbors and neighbor pets do not need barking at. She is a little afraid of other people and dogs but she will get over that soon enough.

I am so glad I got little Katie, she shows so much love and affection; she is so dedicated to my husband and me. I made the right choice and will always be thankful for the Rescue groups that are out there saving little girls and boys from this terrible life. We can show them lots of love and attention and show them good and normal lives, they respond very well. So think about adopting a Dog Mill Rescue when you are ready for that new family member.
