Don't throw your hands up in despair. I am going to give you ways to help eliminate destructive chewing.
The first thing you must know is that chewing can sometimes be caused by boredom. To solve this problem give your dog plenty of exercise.
If you are able to catch your dog chewing on something he should not be. You can say no and replace the item with an appropriate chew toy. Giving a replacement can be very helpful with resolving the problem.
Dogs with high levels of anxiety due to a change in environment can start excessive chewing. This can sometimes be corrected by surrounding the dog with familiar things. Dogs will be happier and more contented with their surroundings and less likely to chew.
If you find that this continues to be a problem. Removing items that are tempting for your dog to chew on can go a long way to correcting the problem. Puting shoes in the closet and keeping items that can be chewed out of reach will help with solving the problem.
Leaving the dog alone in the house for long periods of time can be a big problem waiting to happen. If you need to leave your dog alone make sure that there is a room that does not have things that can be chewed. Using a mud room or bathroom in conjunction with toys can be the best way to protect your belongings.
The use of a cage may be necessary with some dogs. This should only be done when the family is not watching their dog. Play, love and praise can go a long way to solving most of your problems with your furry friend.
