All puppies need some form of identification, even before receiving their rabies shots and being licensed. Most pet stores and veterinary offices have access to sources that make identification tags that can be attached to the puppy's collar.

It is more important that the owner's name is on this tag than the dog's name. Collars and tags have been known to come off and then, suddenly, all means of identification are gone.

An additional protection is to have your dog tattooed when she reaches maturity. Your social security number can be used for identification. There are tattoo registries that list dogs.

Another form of identification is a microchip, a rice grain sized pellet that is actually implanted under the dog's skin. Identification is made by a sensing device. Tattoos and microchips are excellent forms of IDs; however, the person who finds a dog may not know to look for a tattoo, and certainly would not know to look for a microchip.

Consequently, a dog should wear an ID tag as well as a tattoo or microchip.

Exercise, even in the form of play, is an important aspect of your dog's daily routine. Make sure to include a toy or two among the supplies you buy for your puppy's homecoming.

Many people find that paper training their young puppy is a good first step in the house training process. Puppy proofing your house before you bring your new dog home will help prevent unfortunate accidents.

The single best preventive measure one can take to ensure that a dog is not lost or stolen is to provide her with a completely fenced yard. Most Golden Retrievers will be contained with a 5 to 6 foot high fence constructed of wire mesh, chain link or wood.

Check the fence periodically for digging spots or weakened structure. While most Goldens are good at staying near their homes, all it takes is one unexpected occurrence for a Golden to be out of her unfenced yard and in potential danger.
