How to Build Wooden Dog Houses

By Annette Nowlin

The first step is to decide whether you want to use a kit or not. If you are someone who has construction experience building from scratch may appeal to you. If you have limited experience but feel confident using provided materials and instructions a kit is the way to go.

When purchasing dog house kits you will notice many different styles out there. The traditional style is the wood house with triangle roof. Some styles are square and do not have a roof. Others actually come with an attached fence area so your dog has a safe place to roam if your property is not fenced. The available kits range from budget priced and simple to assemble to more expensive and difficult. Comparison shopping is a must when looking at these kits because there are so many choices, including wood luxury homes that look like miniature human dwellings.

If you are building from scratch, you will need to create or find plans to go by. Plans for dog houses can be found in books or downloaded online, sometimes for free and sometimes for a price. The plans should not only include a blueprint of the house but also directions and a supplies list. The supplies required for building a dog house can be purchased at most any hardware store, lumber store or home improvement store. Before you even think of starting to build make sure you've read the plans in detail and have everything you need gathered together.

Wooden dog houses can be insulated to protect your dog from extreme temperatures. Some kits come with insulation, others don't. If you are doing the project yourself you will want to use either home quality insulation or foam insulation behind the walls. The base of the dog house should be elevated to keep water off the floor in case of rain or snow. With a little research and effort you can build or assemble the perfect dog house for your canine, no matter how big or small.
