1. Dogs that are busy are not bored. Using toys that are able to be manipulated by your dog helps prevent boredom. The toy that has a hole in it is one that you can add peanut butter to or treats. This can create a a fun pastime for your dog.
2. Frequent exercise prevents not only nervous energy but keeps your dog healthy. Going in the yard with your dog to play every day reminds them that you love them and gives them time to run.
3. Learning the neighborhood. Taking your dog for walks gives them the opportunity to investigate their environment. They discover where other dogs have been, what cats have wandered by and find new sights and smells.
4. Many areas have dog parks. This especially exciting for dogs because they have a chance to play and socialize with other dogs.
5. Keep your dog content. If a dog knows when things are going to happen, they will be much calmer. Having them on a feeding schedule will also give you a chance to use food as a reward when you start training. If you work with them before dinner, they will be hungry and respond to treats.
6. When training be consistent. Dogs do better when you use the same commands every time you give them a direction. They are happier and comfortable learning in this type of environment.
7. Make training fun. Using praise and treats makes it fun to follow your lead.
8. Most important is your time. Leave enough time to spend with your dog. Happiness is being with you above all else.
