Crate Training a Dog - The Easy Way

Crate training a dog is very useful and recommended by vets and the SPCA as well.

Especially if you leave your dog at home alone during work hours or want to keep your dog out of trouble at home, crate training will give you peace of mind, knowing that your dog is safe and comfortable.

One of the most important things when buying a crate is that it is comfortable for your dog. It should be large enough for your dog to stand, turn around and lay down.

At first your dog may sniff the crate and not go inside, that is why it is important that you place all its toys, water and food inside the crate. Another helpful tip is to place treats inside the crate.

It is important that your dog take naps inside the crate, eats inside the crate and overall gain comfort and knows that being inside the crate is safe.

Once your dog comes in and out of the crate normally you can now begin to leave your dog inside the crate while the door is closed. For the first time only leave your dog inside the crate for about 15-30 minutes. Preferably keep the crate in a common area so your dog does not feel alone.

Even if your dog barks, do NOT let it out of the crate. Doing so will only teach the dog that every time it barks you will come. After some time your dog will stop barking and get used to the crate.

Every time your dog comes out of the crate and has behaved well give it a treat and appraisal.

Remember to leave your dog in the crate for short periods of time at first. Then you can try while you sleep and afterwards while you go out to work. However, NEVER leave your dog in a crate for more than 8 hours, this can stress your dog and cause behavior problems.
