Become a Dog Trainer

By Ron Berg

Are you interested in a Career in Dog Training, or would like to become a Dog Trainer?

Do you desire to train your canine friend? Then, as you become a dog trainer, you have to select between 2 equally useful methods to dog training: classical and operant conditioning.

Classical conditioning is a subject of association. Fundamentally, you will be required to introduce stimulants to your dog, to train him to response in a certain way when he comes across certain stimulants. For instance, ringing a bell prior to feeding him a treat will make him expect a treat whenever he perceives the sound of a bell ring. Treating him a dog treat every time he rolls on the floor will in the long run make him turn over on the floor when shown a dog treat.

Classical conditioning is thought to be the superior of the 2 methods in dog training.

But, operant conditioning is a very near substitute.

Operant conditioning involves the presentation of negative or constructive supports all the way through the course of dog teaching. Constructive supports are prizes you will give for your pet whenever he does anything approving. The thought is to coach your pet to carry on doing these actions so that he can get his prizes. Negative supports are retributions inflicted upon the pet whenever he does anything poor.

Some dog trainers would say that constructive supports should be chosen over negative supports. Who would wish to see his pet suffer, after all?

But, some canine breeds take action better to negative supports rather than constructive supports. English bulldogs, pugs and spitzes, for instance, are more amenable to education when penalized for their faults.

Negative supports, however, can be catastrophic for specific canine breeds. A German Shepherd, once penalized, may feel bitter about his possessor for life. A Shih Tzu can diminish his liking for a possessor who brings in harmful supports for the duration his training. The same goes for a Pomeranian.

Inexperienced at dog teaching or the Career in Dog Training?

It is sensible to take the classical conditioning course first because it is undemanding to do.

To become a Dog Trainer, or the pursuit of a Career in Dog Training, requires serious consideration.
