How to Train Your Best Friend

By Desiree McConnell

Ever heard the expression - A dog is a mans best friend?

Well, its one that millions of people all over the world will wholeheartedly agree with and nearly all of them will recall a dearly beloved family pet, perhaps long since departed for the happy hunting grounds but still a part of cherished childhood memories.

Dogs remain loyal through thick and thin, they don't ask for anything in return except our love and the occasional walk or ball game and they are always there to offer comfort and unwavering devotion. There is no doubt that dogs make fantastic pets but the experience of owning a dog is that much more rewarding when both owner and dog receive the proper training.

There are many different methods that are currently used in dog training but few are known to be truly effective. It is important to consider the following when choosing a training program : will you be doing the training yourself or hiring a professional choose a method which you are comfortable with never use methods which enforce punishment or pain using positive reinforcement methods

Using positive reinforcement in the form of treats and rewards for good behaviour will teach a dog to respect rather than fear you and as with all training methods, its always more effective to offer positive praise. Physical punishment should never be used as this will only result in an aggressive and unhappy dog.

By learning how to become the 'pack leader', you give your dog direction and he will learn his place in the 'pack'. Be consistent in your training methods and eventually the dog will realise you are the dominant member. Consistency must be maintained, everyone needs to know the method you are using so that they can continue in the same way. Address unwanted behaviour by treating the cause not the symptom (excessive barking, aggression, chewing etc)

By utilising a training program that is suitable for you and your dog, you will form a strong lifelong relationship with your best friend but with all the training programs out there which one do you choose? Its important to make the right choice as both you and your dog will be learning together and its vital that once you start a training program, you feel confident enough to continue. It would be difficult to stop a training program half way and to attempt another successfully.
