There are so many dog training problems out there that it almost makes you not want to ever get a dog. When you see adult dogs with issues that stem from not being trained properly, you think maybe it would be better to get a dog that has already been successfully trained and ready to go, kind of like buying a new car that has all the bells and whistles plus an extended warrantee. After all, you don't want to screw up.
But then again, it's that adorable, needy, clumsy puppy that catches your eye and that you fall in love with. So you end up with a puppy and lots of determination and promises to your spouse that the puppy will be trained properly. Hmm... how to train your puppy...
There are three routes you can go:
1. Hire a dog trainer.
Yes, you can hire someone else to do the job. But before you do, check out their background and reputation for successful training. Ask to see their references and contact these people. How long does the training last? It takes a while for a puppy to be fully trained as they need some time to mature. Does the dog trainer only work on one specific thing or do they cover it all? Do they do routine follow ups? Keep in mind price is going to be a factor in this option.
2. Take your puppy to school.
Some pet stores offer programs for new puppy owners. The class may meet once or twice a week and there are other puppies and owners there too. The downside to this is that you have to commit yourself to showing up at the classes every time in order to get the benefits or it could be a waste of your money. Also, the other puppies may be too much of a distraction for your own pup.
3. Train your puppy yourself.
Training your puppy yourself can be very frustrating and yet very rewarding. It will definitely build up the bond you two share. So as not to make mistakes, start off by reading up on the dog training tricks the experts use. Knowing the techniques to use will certainly cut down on the frustration factor, produce results quicker, and prevent dog training problems.
