Finding the Best Brand of Puppy Food - 3 Important Tips!

By Candice Lee

Here are 3 important tips to help you find best brand of puppy food!

1. First, stay away from corn and wheat! The best brand of puppy food will NOT have corn and wheat. One of the biggest problems with these ingredients is that they can be very hard to digest. A puppy food can have corn and wheat and sound like it's great food (corn and wheat are indeed natural) but just because it's natural doesn't mean it's necessarily good for your puppy. Puppies can become allergic over time to grains like corn and wheat, so starting them off on these grains is not a good idea.

2. The best brand of puppy food will NOT use "Splitting." This is a common practice among the pet food industry. For example, of the top four ingredients in Purina O.N.E. dog food - (Chicken, Ground Yellow Corn, Ground Wheat, and Corn Gluten Meal two of them are corn-based products and actually the same product! When components of the same whole ingredients are listed separately, like ground yellow corn meal and corn gluten meal, it makes it SEEM as if there is less corn than chicken, even though the combined corn ingredients far outweigh the chicken. And it's the protein that should be more important!

3. Finally, the best brand of puppy food WILL be holistic. The formal definition of holistic is "pertaining to the whole body" so a holistic puppy food will address the whole puppy and will include a complete array of nutrients and whole foods that are beneficial to your puppy's health. Holistic puppy foods will be all natural and top quality and rich in powerful antioxidants. This will include fruits, vegetables and other natural sources.
