Puggles are categorized a lapdogs and are known to be very good apartment dogs, well suited to city life. That is the Pug part of their lineage. But they also have Beagle in them and it is from here they get their energy and inquisitiveness that makes them great dogs to go out with, be it for a meal in a restaurant, a picnic or a long holiday out of town.
Not all restaurants welcome dogs. A sad fact we dog lovers have to deal with. But the number of dog friendly bistros is increasing everyday and you are sure to find a few where you live. Puggles are sociable and inquisitive dogs that are happy to experience new things and places and, if properly trained, are less likely than many other breeds to become nervous and badly behaved in new surroundings. When taking your Puggle out to a café, there are some rules to follow and precautions to take.
• Every dog friendly restaurant has its own rules. Find out what they are before taking your Puggle there.
• Take the dog to a park or grassy area before entering the restaurant so he can do his "business" and not embarrass you in public.
• Your Puggle should always be tied to your chair on a short leash so he does not get in the way of others.
• Never tie him to a table. Puggles are curious dogs and love to go off to investigate new things. Being stronger than they look, they can pull hard enough to make a table fall over!
• Some restaurants provide water for your dog. Check this in advance and if they do not, take water and a bowl along with you.
• If your visit to the restaurant is near your Puggle's eating time, take some snacks along with him so he does not get restless.
• Puggles are normally neat eaters, but accidents do happen. Have some paper napkins with you to clean up, if necessary.
• Keep an eye on the weather before you go out. Dog areas in restaurants are always in the open. Its fine for you to sit warmly bundled up in the open on a cold day, but what your poor dog?
Everything above is based on the premise that you have properly trained your Puggle to behave properly in a restraint where there are new sites, sounds, smells and lots of people around. The Puggle is by nature well behaved but before taking them out to restaurants, they need to be acclimatized slowly. Start by taking your dog out for a quick cup of coffee. Once he is used to this, spend some more time having a sandwich and keep increasing the time till your Puggle is used to the concept of going the places where there is noise, food and people and knows how to behave in these conditions.
Its not difficult to do and you have an advantage over many other dog owners in that Puggles are by nature well behaved and obedient.
