Bringing a new puppy home for the first time can be trying for the owner and traumatic for the puppy. This is especially so if you are a first time dog owner. There are tons of books and internet articles that will tell you what to do and not to do and they are worth consulting. But remember each breed of dog is different and so how your puppy will react will depend on its breed. Puggles are by nature gentle, sociable and calm dogs who quickly adapt to new surroundings. But a puppy is always a puppy and so here are a few tips aimed specially at Puggle owners to make their puppy's introduction to its new home smooth.
• Puggles are by nature warm, loving and affectionate dogs. And puppies need to adjust when brought to their new home, but Puggles need to be treated with the sensitivity their natures demand.
• Your Puggle puppy has, from the day he came into this world, been in the company of his mother and siblings with humans as part, but not the central part, of his life. All that changes when you take him home.
• The drive home can be frightening for a puppy. When taking your Puggle back home, take a taxi or get a friend to drive you. Hold your puppy in your arms and keep him close to you. You are going to be the center of your Puggle's world and its best he be close to you as he leave his first home for the first time.
• Once you reach home, place your Puggle on the floor and stay close to him as he wanders around. Be prepared for some urination either from his trying to instinctively mark out the area or out of nervousness.
• Stay with you puppy all the time and do not leave him alone.
• Carry him around the house so get gets to see all of it.
• Put on the music system softly for a while, as well as the TV, so he gets used to these sounds.
• Feed and give water to your Puggle puppy as advised by the breeder your bought him from or by a veterinarian.
• Puppies often do not know when to stop eating and drinking. Puggles are like this. And the nervousness of the first day in your house can make this worse. There will be accidents, but start laying out the news paper and encouraging your Puggle puppy to use this.
• Each dog has its own individual nature and so it is difficult to predict how a puppy will react to his new surrounding. However, Puggles are curious dogs by nature and once your puppy starts to feel a little secure and comfortable in his new surroundings, he will start to investigate on his own.
• Make sure that the doors of all the closets and rooms you do not want him to go into by himself are closed. Be especially careful about the door to the basement!
