Vital Information For Traveling With Your Dog

By Ty Magnum

When traveling with your dog, there are a few tips you need to follow to ensure a safe and comfortable ride for the animal. First off, make sure that your pet is healthy enough to travel by taking them to a vet about one week beforehand and having them checked out. While you are there, be sure that all of their vaccinations are up to date. You will want to bring along proof of this, so make sure you have all the appropriate paperwork before you leave. If not, the vet that performed the shots can most likely give you copies. You may also want to bring a photo of your dog, in case it gets lost.

Make sure that your dog has proper identification on them, specifically as a tag around their neck. This info should include the dogs name, address, phone number and a cell phone number. Many people have their dogs chipped, meaning a small chip is implanted underneath the animals skin that can help them be reunited with their dog.

Plan ahead for your dog when you travel with them. Bring your dogs favorite chew toys, and buy a couple more for the ride so they have something new with them. Bring their favorite blanket or dog bed with them, as well. Make sure that you take frequent breaks so that your dog can stretch and use the bathroom. Always keep your dog leashed, as well. Be sure to bring plenty of dog food and bottled water, and be sure your dog gets plenty to drink. Never leave him or her in a closed car if you stop anywhere- always be sure the windows are down enough to allow plenty of air circulation. If you plan to stay in hotels on your trip, be sure to check ahead to see if they are pet friendly.

Traveling with your dog can be an easy task, as long as you properly prepare for the journey with the intent to keep your dog healthy and happy!
