If you're reading this article, chances are you are a dog owner and dog lover. That being the case, you know that dog behaviour has been hitting the news lately and the subject has been placed at the top of all responsible dog owners agendas. If your dog does not respond to your call or your command, then he is not safe and he is not a safe dog for others to be around. But just what are the first steps towards good dog behaviour? This article will outline one of the main reasons dogs behave badly.

Lack Of Exercise

Believe it or not, some dogs showing bad behaviour are not getting enough exercise! A dog that lacks exercise, will use up that energy to do things he should not be doing: he may become aggressive, start barking, digging etc. It might sound like something way too obvious, but some dogs never leave the yard and or never leave the house. There are owners who routinely leave their animals caged in a yard and they never get beyond the fence. Chances are, these dogs will exhibit bad dog behaviour.

Dogs need exercise! This is part of your responsibility as a dog owner, it basically comes with the territory. You should aim to walk your dog a couple of times a day and for about forty minutes at a time. If your dog is up to it, strenuous "fetch" games are great for dogs. You are aiming to tire your dog out so that all that he wants to do when he gets home is to rest. If your dog does that, then you are doing a great job.

Understandable though, we are all busy people and some of us do not have the time to spend a good two hours per day exercising our dogs. Faced with this dilemma what can you do? Well of late doggy treadmills have become very popular and are great for tiring a dog out. But as good as these treadmills are, to curb bad dog behaviour, you still do need to exercise your dog out of the house. Using only a treadmill will become boring for a dog and you will soon defeat the purpose if you substitute out door fun and exercise, for indoor exercise.

Keep your dog stimulated by varying the games you play with him and the places that you take him. Make sure your dog has fun when you take him out and it is a treat that he looks forward to when he knows he is going out for some exercise. We've all seen the scenes of those dogs who fetch their leads for their owners to take them out, they are happy well behaved dogs.
