It is the fact that the Australian Shepherd belongs to the Herding Dog Group. It is thought to be medium sized and they have tremendous capability to give escort to the shepherds working in the ranches. Their guessing power with intelligence is exceptional and very conducive to the protection of the shepherds. They are also used to guard the house at night. Their swift and dauntless attitude is very attractive.
However, without proper training Australian Shepherds can become very violent or disrespectful. If someone goes through the pages of history he will know that in actuality the great forefathers of Australian Shepherds were not born in Australia. These Aussies were actually reared up in Spain. Much later they were shifted to the United States and they were much upgraded and nourished in California by an Australian. There is some confusion regarding the source of their originality. Some claim that these dogs are the byproducts of cross-breeding because in 19th century o r the early part of 20th century, Australian Shepherds were shipped to America with other livestock. Farmers underscored the need to use them to control the cattle and other herding animals in the ranches and farms.
These dogs were actually hybridized with the local dogs such as American and English Shepherd breeds. The main job of these ferocious and hardworking dogs was to monitor the movements of the livestock and other herding animals in the grazing fields and ranches. They are very much brave and bold. They can show expertise in showing different sorts of challenging games. As they are very capable of controlling the livestock in the field therefore they have the basic instinct to play such risky games without any basic training as well. The average range of the height of the Australian Shepherds is approximately between 18 and 23 inches. Their average weight is also around 35 to 60 pounds with wide range of colors like red, blue, blue merle, black etc.
However it is very important to let them play within the enclosed area. If they are unable to play or at least run or gambol across the lawn or some open place then they can feel disturbed and lonely. This type of monotony can snowball into violent and rowdy attitude. They can become impudent and stubborn. They must be given some vaccination to protect from virus infection or allergy. As they are very fond of playing with kids therefore one should make them sociable through specific and compact training programs so that they can get accustomed to homely environment.
