When it comes to getting a dog you have many possible options. The one you choose however will decide if your dog will become a great and valuable part of your family or just another mutt at the dog shelter. Ask any experienced dog owner and they will tell you that your best bet is to get your dog from a reputable breeder. But where do you begin is the hard question.
Finding a breeder
Assuming you have a particular breed in mind, it's time for you to find some dog breeders that are in your area.
Where to find dog breeders
- Dog Magazines - magazines such as Dog Fancy will list breeders of almost all purebred dogs
- Internet - do a search on Google and include your city in the search
- Vet clinics / Dog Grooming Parlors - they are usually connected with breeders and can refer you
- Phone books, Newspapers, Breed directories are also good sources
Not all breeders are reputable
Once you have narrowed down your choices, you can begin the visitation process. But before you do, there are a few things you have to know first. Not all dog breeders out there are quality breeders. Some breeders have realized that they can make a quick buck by breeding as many puppies as they can with little to no regard to the potential problems. Often, these bad breeders have more than one breed and operate large scale puppy mills where dogs are placed in enclosures and their sole purpose is to breed.
On the other hand, many quality breeders care more about the health and temperament of their dogs than they do about the money. They strive to produce pups that adhere to breed standards and will try to minimize many of the health problems that may be prevalent in that breed.
Quality breeders are the ones you should be looking at. They will provide you with a puppy that has the best chance of growing up to be a healthy and well round adult dog.
