So you have brought a new puppy home with you and trying to train him/her all by yourself. For this you need the knowledge and techniques used by professional dog trainers or you will most likely find it impossible.
The age best to start training your puppy is in the 6-8 week period. In this period of time your puppy will have a mind like a sponge, ready to absorb all useful information you throw at them.
If your dog is past this age or even along way past this age don't panic, your dog can still absorb this information about the same rate or even faster sometimes if you have a calm dog which pays attention to you.
It is a key ingredient to training your dog that the owner understands that training their dogs will help the dog in a positive way. One of the easiest ways an owner can train their dog is to reward them for every positive action they make rather than punishing them for every negative action they make. For example, every time your dog does what it is instructed to do reward it with a biscuit or its favourite treat. This will help them understand that if obey a command they are rewarded, so they will do it again and again. All dogs crave the attention and approval of the owner and it is in the top 3 of their wants and needs list, competing with food and water.
The dog owner should never strike the dog violently due to training failure. Instead they should keep their dog calm.
