Does my dog need clothes?
Dogs are no different to people when it comes to cold weather, they feel uncomfortable when the temperature drops. Many vets will suggest extra protection for your dog if walking in very low temperatures.
If your dog is small, very young, very old or has short fur and you live in a cold climate it may be advisable to invest in a hoodie, coat or scarf to keep them warm during the winter. Small and toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, Dachhunds and Toy Poodles are very vulnerable to cold weather. Dogs with very short coats include Boxers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Greyhounds and Weimaraners. These breeds are especially susceptible to cold in windy weather.
All dogs will feel the benefit of a shower proof coat, no matter what sort of fur they have for those grey drizzly days. Every dog should be considered on his/her own merits but in many cases clothing can make your dog more comfortable.
What should I consider when buying dog clothes?
The two most important things to consider when buying dog clothes are comfort and safety. Clothing should not restrict the movement of your dog in any way, it should not be too tight nor should it be so loose it is liable to snag on something. Please see our measuring guide for help with this.
Clothing that helps you, and others to see your dog better in the dark is also something you should consider. A dog coat with a reflective strip, or even a pink hoodie will help you to see your pet in the dark.
