German Shepherds make great pets, as long as they are properly trained! It's important to remember that all German Shepherds are very active and energetic dogs, which means they need lots of exercise as well as attention. They are also naturally dominant dogs which makes training even more important. Instinctively they will want to be the controlling one in the relationship. You must make sure this isn't the case from the very beginning.
As with all dog training, it is much more effective to give praise on good behaviour than it is to shout and rave when it does something wrong. You do need to correct your dog if it isn't acting how you want, but physical punishment should never be used as this will only result in an aggressive, wary dog and a poor dog to owner relationship.
It is also extremely important to be consistent, and this includes all members of the family. Everyone needs to know how you are trying to train the dog so they can all help in the same way. If different members of the family are praising the dog for different things this will only end in confusion and a poorly trained German Shepherd.
During German Shepherd training the dog may try to test where he is in the pack by ignoring your commands or misbehaving. Try to carry on with the training by being consistent and eventually the dog will realise you are the dominant member of the pack. This will help you to have a strong and healthy relationship with your dog.
