A new pet can be a great joy in anyone's life, especially if that pet is a Tibetan terrier puppy. Known for their loyal nature, inquisitive personalities, and independence, Tibetan terriers are an excellent breed of dog for large families and singles alike. They are small dogs with big personalities and may be somewhat impudent when it comes to house training, leading to damaged carpets and rugs. Fortunately, they are exceptionally bright. With some perseverance you will have your pup happily house-trained in no time and your rugs and carpets will be spotless.
Originally, Tibetan terriers were bred by Buddhist monks to be watchdogs at their temples. Small in stature, these dogs were very intelligent and could be trained to do multiple tasks. Their wise, knowledgeable faces were highly regarded among the monks and many believed that they possessed godly spirits. With personalities that adapted to the peaceful, Buddhist lifestyle, these canines quickly endeared themselves to their masters and learned to alert people living in the temple of any intruders that might try and steal the valuable goods inside.
Tibetan Terriers do have the signature, high, whining bark of many other small dogs, but can be trained to suppress this bark. Similar to a Yorkshire terrier in the frequency and shrillness of bark but wholly unique to the Tibetan terrier in terms of tone and personality, if nothing else, the "yip" is distinct and you will never mistake your dog's cries for another. For the Buddhists, this was an exceptionally useful characteristic to have bred for modern humans it may not be quite as useful but it is definitely unique.
Similarly unique is the Tibetan's quick learning ability that should definitely be played to when teaching commands and tricks. For some owners, this may serve as a double-edged sword, for just as the pooch can quickly learn to understand what you want them to do, they can just as quickly learn what they can and can't get away with. It would not be too much of an exaggeration to treat training your animal as a task equal to teaching a small child: the same basic rules apply to each. If you are inconsistent, overly lax, or unclear in your rule making and enforcing, the Tibetan terrier, like a small child, will learn the loopholes in the obedience that is expected of them and they may exploit them. Where house-training is concerned they will find ways to destroy your rugs and carpets when you are not around to see them.
It is not uncommon to find a family with a Tibetan terrier that is exceptionally well behaved when alone with the family members, but wild and nearly uncontrollable around company when it knows that the family will be distracted from its behavior. This behavior could be expected with house training and carpet wetting. If your standard of house training is to train your dog so long as they can see you and be afraid of immediate punishment, you will train your dog to wet the carpet when you are out of the house and out of eyesight.
The key then, is to be persistent. To keep your carpet from being ruined by your pet make sure you give the dog a fair shake. If you come home and the dog has soiled the carpet, immediately find them, bring them over to the soiled spot on the rug, and repeat the word "no" in a firm voice three times. This is neither overly severe, nor unfairly lax. It doesn't provide immediate correction but the pup will get the picture nonetheless.
As with all training, consistency is key. Don't just be consistent with negative reinforcement; give heaps of positive reinforcement when they relieve themselves in the correct place and away from your rugs and carpets. Don't just be consistent with what you reinforce, be consistent with when you reinforce it as well. Be sure to continue the reinforcement process over hours, days, and weeks, not just in a given weekend when you feel you have the energy-remember, the health of your pet and the cleanliness of your carpets and rugs are at stake. With the right mindset and a focused approach, your smart Tibetan terrier, will keep your rug clean and your life a joy.
