Tips For Preventing Your Dog From Chewing Your Furniture

All dogs chew, but for some pet owners it has gone past the cute stage and is becoming a real destructive problem. There are many ways to train your bored dog to stop chewing your stuff up. Your pet needs plenty of mental stimulation and exercise as well as other deterrents to curb there need to chew everything in site.

Confine your dog to a particular room while you are out and make sure that there is nothing that he can destroy. Please do not lock him into a room or crate all day! Not being able to move around or have anything to do with his time is very hard on an animal. If you don't have a fence, another option is to give him a run in your backyard on a line, running back and forth may seem uneventful but your pet will get the exercise that he needs.

Boredom and loneliness are the two main causes of destructive behavior like chewing, digging, and excess barking. You can try leaving a radio or TV on make sure that it's tuned to a show featuring people talking. The idea is to make your dog feel like he's got company in the house.

You can apply a bad tasting substances such as pepper or hot sauce or anti-chew salves, sprays or creams (Bitter Apple is excellent) which you can buy at any pet store or supermarket.

You could also make there toys more desirable by spraying them with cooking oil and garlic salt, dogs love these tastes and are more likely to play with there toys this way. Make sure you spray it on right before you leave so that it doesn't wear off.

Boredom is the main reason for chewing in most dogs. If you leave your dog alone he will chew up everything. Even dogs that aren't prone to separation anxiety find it hard to have nothing to do all day. Make sure you are always giving your dog the exercise and attention they need and give them something to do when your away.
