My Sick Sixteen Year Old Schnauzer

By Beverly Boisen

Owning two miniature Schnauzers over the course of seventeen years one can see that some health issues can arise. Our first Schnauzer seemed very healthy for fifteen years, and it seemed over night she was listless,

She ate her food and slept more, but that is quite common in an older dog. This is nothing new to all of us dog owners. So in her sixteenth year I noticed she had an anal problem, lots of pus coming out even though she was not going to the bathroom.

That alarmed me so I brought her to my vet and he said the sacs are not functioning properly. I asked him why and he said it just happens. So I asked him to do what he has to to stop this. He did squeeze the area and that stopped it for a while. Then she started to bleed from that area and the stench was unbearable. So I brought her back and he said, there is nothing we can do.

He said, she is old. She then stopped eating and drinking, and that is not a good sign.

She was dying. My vet suggested she be euthanized and so reluctant I made the appointment and cancelled many times and finally did it. The sad thing was watching her going down the hall being walked by the technician. But she is better off. We waited one year and purchased another miniature Schnauzer at a breeder at ten weeks and she is now sixteen months old. She is doing very well, and she has been on the holistic food not the usual pet store, or grocery store pet food. I truly believe that what we feed our pets is measured on how long they will live and be healthy too.

Vets bills can be very costly. Schnauzers do get warts and this puppy is on a product for her skin and coat as well as a daily vitamin and so far no warts on her. My other Schnauzer never had a vitamin. And so for that I do believe it helps. We all make choices for our pets, some of us do not even think about these issues that crop up and even know what to do. But with education it is critical for the health of your dog. So your Schnauzer can live to be a healthy 20 years old. And on my website those questions will be answered.
