Leash Training a Puppy

By Vic Lee

Once your puppy is walking and running around it is important to teach it at a young age to use a leash and collar.

The first step to leash training a puppy is to have it get used to a collar. This is usually an easy task but you can start by placing a piece of yarn around your puppy's neck or buying a light weight collar.

When your puppy is comfortable with the collar let your puppy sniff the leash and get use to the presence of it. You can start by walking your puppy on a leash around the house.

You could even attach the leash to your belt and have the puppy follow you around the house. The point here is to have your puppy get used to walking at your side and not tug or pull away.

Once your puppy is used to these steps then you can start by taking short walks outside. At first you puppy may become distracted with the things outdoors but simply keep on walking and your puppy will know that it is uncomfortable to be pulling.

If the puppy keeps on pulling on the leash, stop until your puppy stops pulling and then start walking again.

Remember that it is important to keep leash training fun and there is no need for roughness. To start you should only take your puppy out for walks for 15 minutes and then increase the time as the puppy gets used to walking with a leash.
