I'm in Love With Chihuahuas

By Lourdes Amil

I have start by apologizing to people with Large Dogs, don't get me wrong I love dogs but I find little dogs to be irresistible. Having said that I love, love, love Chihuahuas, again I apologize to the rest of the small breeds.

So far I've had 4 Chihuahuas, all females two fawn, one black and one black and tan. The four were not only different in color but different in personality, so when people say that all Chihuahuas are the same, nervous, barking little terrors I have to differ.

I am going to begin with my first Chihuahua, PeeWee. I don't think I have to explain the name; it was suitable for the size. PeeWee was an Apple Head, Fawn Chihuahua that maxed out at 6 pounds. I walked into a Pet Shop that was going out of business looking for a Parrot and while I was walking around I ran into a little Chihuahua in a huge cage. Every time I tried to reach to pet her she would fall, needless to say I wanted to take her home. I approached the Pet Shop owner and inquired about my new little friend. The Pet Shop owner told she was not for sale because she suffered from low blood sugar. He explain to me that she would require a great deal of attention and he wanted to make sure that she would go to right person. I knew at that time he was talking to me, I was the right person. I explain to him my commitment and interest and he turned me down!

I kept insisting and explain my case and he ignored me, I followed him around the Pet Shop until he started to pay attention to me. He told, "Okay, you win but under one condition, you leave now and return tomorrow morning if you still want her" I asked him "What time do you open?"

Next day at 7:30 am I was standing outside the Pet Shop, I waited till 9:00 am when he arrived. As he came out of his car he saw me and said "I guess you do want her" we went into the Pet Shop and I held her and feed her and told she was going home with me.

PeeWee was a little person; I never had to use a lead or ask not to do any thing more than once. Against the advice of everyone she slept with me in bed and when I was sick with the flu, if I was in bed for 10 hours, so was she. She use to eat at the same time I did and when I was showering she would begin her grooming. PeeWee and I were together for 15 years and she became a member of the family. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I still miss her.
