Clicker Training - The Basics

By Joanna Mason

Clicker Training is an effective science-based method of training your dog from an early age. Dog-owners like it because it is positive "Operant Conditioning" which is a form of behaviour modification. Dogs like it because it is rewards-based and they enjoy not only the rewards but pleasing you!

Clicker training is simple, both for owners and dogs, and improves communication. Good behaviour is rewarded with a click and either a tasty treat for the dog or a favourite toy to play with - all positive reinforcement that doesn't require any punishment or aggression - but may be a little patience from the trainer!

Clicker training is also versatile and can be used to teach any command. For example, if you wish to teach the 'down' command, simply place a treat on the floor (while holding it - you don't want the dog to sneak that treat before you're ready) and the dog will naturally stoop toward it. While repeating the 'down' command encourage the dog to also put his/her belly on the floor, click and reward.

Most trainers agree that this method is both an effective and safe way to train any dog basic and even more complex commands. It is also a gentle and positive technique which reinforces the relationship between dog and owner.

Clickers are generally very inexpensive, some even come free with dog products and/or puppy packs from veterinarians. Remember the trick is all in the timing - immediately the dog does something you wish, click and reward. In addition, be consistent so as not to confuse your dog until he/she will perform the required command without the need for a 'click'.
