Clicker training means that you're training your dog via positive reinforcement.
To begin this process, your dog will first need to learn to associate the sound of a mechanical click with with something positive, usually a treat.
We click the clicker and immediately give a reward of a small treat. Repeating the clicking, instantly followed by feeding a treat multiple times during a single session, quickly conveys the sense to your dog that the clicker is a great thing. Though it may take some dogs longer than others to learn to associate the sound with a reward, most dogs grasp the concept after about five to ten repetitions.
Once they understand the concept that a click equals praise and receiving a reward, it's time to move on to teaching certain tricks or correcting behavior traits.
In teaching a dog to sit, for example, the instant your dog follows your command and sits, we click the clicker and give a treat. It may take him or her a couple of tries but they'll quickly associate following directions with positive reinforcement of the clicker and the instant receipt of a snack. Not only will they actually understand that they've accomplished a goal, they'll be eager to learn more.
Clicker training is so effective that it is used to train police K-9's, military as well as service dogs, even search and rescue animals.
The clicker method is so easy to understand and execute that this training method is no longer limited to just man's best friend. Clicker training has proven to be an invaluable tool in training a great variety of species, including marine animals, livestock, even stubborn house cats are easily trainable with the clicker.
