German Shepherd Dog Names

By Gerd Cornelius Pacher

German Shepherds are known as one of the smartest breed of dogs in the world. They are trained as guard dogs, companions for the handicapped and as police dogs for catching criminals and sniffing out drugs and weapons. They also make very fun loving, friendly family pets.

Naming your German shepherd is quite be easy but you should follow a few simple guidelines. As long as the dog is young and cute, many dog owners make the mistake to give their dog a cute name. Once the German Shepherd has grown up, such a name does not fit well anymore.

Do not confuse your dog and give him/her a new name. Get it right from the start. This dog is a large-sized dog and should get a name that fits. These dogs are working dogs, strong and very intelligent. They are very popular because the are also very loyal. The origin of this breed goes back to 1881 and today these dogs are the third most popular breed in the US as well.

Of course any name you choose for your dog could be a good one regardless of whether or not it is specifically targeted for German shepherds. However, this dog deserves a special name. That said, here are some names for your dog that match with the characteristics of the breed:

Just Because He's the Family Dog: SHEP

This breed of dog is often considered to be "mean". They are not inherently mean. Because German shepherds are intelligent, they learn very quickly. If they are taught to distrust people or to attack indiscriminately, that is what they will do. Raise your dog to be a protector, sure, but most often that will come naturally along with the devotion he or she will feel toward the family that loves and takes care of them.
