Dog Behavior - Begging

By Aakash Shah

Dog is man's best friend. And I am sure that most dog lovers will swear by this saying. Dogs bring such a joy to a household and are so fun to play with. But sometimes their behavior may also embarrass the owners.

One such type of behavior is begging. Many dogs tend to beg for food from their owner's plate and from every one else's around. Some dogs may even try to snatch morsels from the owner's hands if it's begging is not heard. This type of behavior is totally inappropriate and doesn't matter how much an owner loves his dog, should not be encouraged.

But unfortunately, the poor dog does not have any fault in this. Many dog owners are not qualified to train a dog but take it to themselves to train one. And in the process of teaching the dog a few tricks, they teach the dog to beg by giving it treats every time it stands up straight on two feet.

In order to avoid such a habit in dogs, the owners should not make it a habit to give them treats every time they do some tricks. The owners should also stop giving the dog morsels from their own plate while eating, even if it is being its 'cutest' self to get their attention. And I know it will sound cruel to some people but the dog should be kept away from the dining table during meal times and if it is difficult to do so then the dog should be kept in a different room or in his kennel while you eat. This will also stop the other family members especially children from feeding the dog. The owner must make it clear to everyone in the family and guests that they must not feed the dog from their plates and its begging should be ignored at any cost.

But this is just the beginning because the owner will face the real problem once the dog starts to react to the sudden neglect and refused treats. In such a situation, the dog may resort to other antics like howling or barking loudly to get everyone's attention. But the owner should not give any attention to this kind of behavior. He should be firm and consistent in his behavior in order to make the dog understand that begging will no longer be tolerated.

In order to stop the begging at the meal times, you should feed the dog when everyone else is eating but in its own bowl and if possible, in another room. This will keep the dog occupied and it will not bother everyone for food.

The most important thing to succeed in this training is that the owner should stay firm and must never give in the emotions for the dog as it is for the dog's own good. But also remember to not overdo it. This means that you should ignore the antics of the dog but not the dog, as it is your dog and he needs your love and care. Otherwise, many other problems may arise.
