Train Your Puppy Not to Jump Up

By Kelly Richmondson

Puppies are so excited when they see someone. They naturally want to show you their excitement, but it's best to train your puppy not to jump up on people when you open the front door.

One of the most popular methods to train your dog not to jump up is when the puppy is jumping, immediately give him the command, "Sit". Without yelling, firmly say, "Sit". If you haven't taught him to sit, now is a good time to do so. He may be so happy and excited at the new visitor that it's difficult to get his attention.

It's possible that you will need to offer him assistance with the sit command. Once your puppy is sitting you need to praise him like crazy. If your dog trainer has taught you to use dog training treats, then this is when you would give him one. Each trainer has different methods so don't use the training treats if your trainer doesn't recommend them.

Just like with children, consistency is crucial for positive behavior. If your puppy gets back up to jump, continue the process of sitting and each time he sits, be certain to praise him. It's actually quite simple to train your puppy not to jump up when you answer the door, it's really a matter of practice.

If your puppy continues to jump, don't give into him and think he can't be trained. He can be trained and once he realizes you are happy with him when he sits, but unhappy when he jumps, he will obey all of your commands. There is nothing so annoying than entering someone's home and the dog jumps up on you and the dog owner just says, "Sorry" as the dog continues this negative behavior. You can try practicing as well by having someone ring the doorbell and begin training him immediately.
