Puppies Blog 2 - To Bark Or Not to Bark, That is My Question

By Cathy Goat

It's really great in the garden when the sun is shining. Sometimes I just lay in a sunny spot, the warmth on my back and the breeze gently blowing on my face.

There are lots of great smells and I don't have to worry about going to the toilet. But the very... very...best bit is all the great sounds. I get very excited at the sound of people walking past, someone's lawn mower, the sound of children playing, cars, horses, cats, birds, airplanes. It's GREAT!

I like to let these noises know I am here and this is MY garden , you can only come in if I say so. I let them know this by running around barking as loud as I can. I think I am doing a good job as no one has been in the garden.

I'm not sure that my owner is very happy with me though. Sometimes when I have been barking for a while she come out all cross and shouts at me. I am a bit confused because she makes me go inside, but I don't want to so she gives me a treat. So she seems cross with me but than gives me a reward, so I think she might like me barking in he garden as sometimes she just ignores it. These humans make things very confusing sometimes.

Yesterday was different. My owner had been on the computer to buy me some new toys and she was on there ages reading. I think she found some information on changing dogs behaviour. When she had finished she got a large bucket of water and a cup and put it by the door in the garden.

When I went out to play, I raced to the bottom fence and barked at all the noises. Suddenly I was wet. My owner has thrown some of the water at me and said a firm but calm 'NO'. That stopped me barking I can tell you!

It didn't hurt, but I don't really like being wet. I don't think she wants me to bark. Anyway a little while later this cat, yes a very cheeky cat, had the nerve to walk along MY fence. Well you can imagine I soon told her. I was just getting into full barking mode when, whoosh my owner had thrown another cup of water at me.

So I'm defiantly thinking she doesn't like the barking. I really like my owner, she gives me great food, and we have a fantastic time playing and walking together. She is teaching me all sorts of cool things and when I do them I get my favourite treat, a piece of cheese Yum!! She makes me feel safe, so if she doesn't want me to bark in the garden then I wont.

I like it best when she tells me clearly what I am not allowed to do, so I have made up my mind, as I don't like being wet when I am in the garden I can still enjoy all the smell, noises, run around and play, but I'm NOT going to bark anymore!
