Got a Dog Jumping Problem?

By Chad Thompson

Does Your Dog Have A Jumping Problem?

Many dog owners complain that their dogs are a bit overzealous in their greeting. They yell and scream at the dog but do not see any results. If your dog has this problem, you could be contributing to it. If you want to end this behavior, and I hope you do, here's how:

First, do not yell or shout at the dog to stop. Your dog will always listen to your body language and tone of voice before the actual words. So when you shout NO! Stop it! and flail around, you are just encouraging the behavior. As your dog senses your energy level increase, he will get more excited and the behavior will continue. Pushing the dog away will also create more jumping. Your dog will think you are playing and want to keep up the game.

Second, turn your back and hold your ground. Do not engage in any of the behavior. Just ignore it. Follow through and do not touch, talk to, or make ye contact with your dog for several minutes. This method is effective but it takes some time. Remember, patients and dog training go hand in hand.

Another method when your dog jumps is to hold your dog's paws gently. Do not squeeze them. This does not hurt the dog but it's not comfortable either. If you do this once or twice and hold him there for 30 seconds, he will no longer want to offer his paws to eagerly in a place that you can catch them. This method works in a similar manner to the popular bitter apple solution to chewing. While the product is not harmful, it certainly isn't a great experience for your dog either.

When using these solutions, be sure to give your dog the sit command and give him a treat or affection. The idea is that if he jumps, the response is negative (no affection from you or paw holding). If he comes and sits, he knows that he gets a ton of love or a tasty treat. If you are consistent, you can changing your dog's greeting from jumping to sitting.
