Puppy Training - How to Train Your Dog to Sit

By Rikard Ingvarsson

Many do opine that the command training should be imparted on the puppy from the day it enters the house. Well, if you do not know it still, you should apply this also. The puppy as a part of the inheritance gets hold of several bad habits from the beginning. These can be rectified only through the means of the command training. Again any command training is divided into several stages of which the first is the sit. This is of utmost importance and should be trained from the very first day.

Training the sit command should be done by you being the owner and also the trainer of the dog. The puppy at this period remains in the nascent stage and so it is not safe to appoint any other person to train it. But you must always be very careful. Though you are the owner, you are being viewed as the trainer for the first time by your pet. Now how should you set in motion and go on with the sit command? The first step is comparatively easy and you just have to utter the word "sit" in a commanding tone. But this must be said only when the puppy is found to sit on its own initiative. This makes the puppy to synchronize the command with his own action. You should follow the same step while apprizing him of other commands. There should be the inclusion of a scrumptious treat in the program and it should be on your hand to show it. This is the part of reward training.

Reward training, if it is conducted successfully, is proficient enough to bolster the program of training and also to make it sit. However this should be used seldom since frequent use of it may make it synonymous to indulgence. This is totally undesirable and so there shouldn't be the repetition of these. You shall have to follow some other measures in addition. Try to get down to the level of the puppy. This will certainly make you less threatening to the dog and also builds up the mutual coordination.

If you have the treat with you at the time of training, bring it over the head of the puppy little by little. The dog because of having a keen sense of smell will get hold of it shortly and will get encouraged to work for more. On the other hand give him the treat whenever he excels. You can also pat him on its neck and back. This is also very effective and appreciated by the puppy as well.

The success of the sit command depends on the fortitude, commitment of the trainer and also the adaptability of the dog. This is not enough and there is also the need of a regular practice. Try to practice it for 2-5 times on a daily basis. There should not be the slightest indication of any overstrain as exhaustion may shrink the spirit of the puppy.

You must follow this schedule till you attain success. There is no other way.
