Free Dogs and Puppies - Where to Look?

Many newspapers have pet sections. In these, you can sometimes find listings for free dogs and puppies. If you want a new pet, but are short of money, this may be an option to pursue. Free pets are also a good option for someone who needs a companion for a pet they already own, or someone who needs more than one puppy. There are some very cute and lovable free animals so don't discount them out of hand.

The owners usually have a phone number that you call to set up a time to see the puppies. Ask what type of dog they have, and then read information about that breed. Most animals in the free section are a mix of different breeds. Be sure to check common health problems for each one so you know what to look for. Even though you are looking at free dogs and puppies you still want healthy ones.

Another consideration should be the condition the puppies are living in. Is the house clean? Are there other animals around that look unhealthy? Do the dogs have fleas or ticks? All of these are important and should be checked out before you take the puppies' home. Some diseases are easily transmitted from animal to animal. If you take a puppy that has already contracted a disease home it could very well die in a few days. There is a very good chance it could give the disease to another animal already in the house also.

If you have reason to believe the free dogs and puppies are sick, but still want one, take it to the vet right away. The vet should be able to check for all common conditions and treat them if possible. Getting the dog checked out before taking it home will ensure any current pets are kept safe.

Another reason to take the puppy to a vet right away is to check for worms. Worms are common in dogs and puppies and are easily taken care of. Some types of worms can be transferred to humans, so it's very important to take the dog to the vet before taking it home. This is doubly important if you have young children. They might not know what the worms are and could easily contract them just by playing with the puppy.

It is possible to find a wonderful pet companion this way. Getting free dogs and puppies means the only costs you will incur are vet fees. You also have the added bonus of knowing you gave a needy animal a home that may have otherwise been put down. Keep this option in mind the next time you, or someone you know, needs a pet.
