5 Beginner Dog Training Tips Guaranteed to Make Training Easier

By Richard Cross Terris

Dog training can be frustrating to start with. If you aren't completely sure how you should do it, it can often end in stress for both you and your dog! Luckily, by following some basic rules you can make training a lot easier for you and your beloved pet. Here are 5 beginner dog training tips to make your life a little less stressful!

1. Train in short bursts

Dogs, especially puppies, have a short attention span. If you try to train them for too long in one go it's likely that they'll get mentally tired and won't be able to take on the training as well.

2. Train when the dog is hungry

By having a training session before a meal rather than after you are assured your dog will be that little bit more excited about the treats you'll use as rewards!

3. Make sure your whole family helps with training

Nothing is more confusing for a dog than having different family members trying to teach it in different ways. Stick to one method and one routine and you'll see much better results.

4. Keep the treats small

You don't want your dog to be filled up after just a few treats, so keep them small and reserve them for when your dog does something good.

5. Use positive training methods

This is a more debatable tip but I believe positive training methods (i.e. encouraging and praising your dog for what it does right rather than punishing for what it does wrong) work best and help to build a healthy dog-owner relationship.
