Bringing a new puppy home is much like bringing a new baby home. Puppies are curious about everything and this can get them in trouble or sometimes be a danger.
It is important to take certain measures before bringing your puppy home to make sure it is a safe environment, you must puppy proof your home!
A good way to get started is to see things from a puppy's point of view. Get down on your hands and knees and take a look around, you will be surprised at the many things you can find and that puppies will find curious either to bite or to hide in.
When you bring your puppy home it will sniff everywhere and every corner to get to know its new home, be sure to be at your puppies side when it first smells around the house. And afterwards as well, keep a close eye on your new puppy to make sure it stays out of trouble or if you discover something new that can be dangerous to your puppy.
Make sure there aren't any electrical cords on the floor or that they are covered. Also, if you have stairs make sure that there is a puppy fence that will keep your puppy from falling since puppies cannot go down or up stairs easily at first.
You might also want to make a place that is just for your new puppy, you can place a dog bed with blankets and toys in a warm place. But if you place your puppy in the kitchen make sure that there are no house cleaning chemicals at its reach.
Make your puppy feel secure and safe in its new home by puppy proofing your home.
