People get a dog for many different reasons, companionship, security, or even to partake in their particular sport. One thing that you do not want your dog to be, no matter what your dogs purpose, is overly aggressive. Dogs develop aggressiveness due to many different factors, however there are some definite things you can do to help your dog be friendly.
One of the biggest reasons dogs become highly aggressive is that they are beaten, hit, spanked, or treated with some other sort of abusive physical behavior. No animal, especially one with the character and personality of a dog, responds positively to being hit. You do want to be quite stern when talking when scolding or punishing your dog, but being physically aggressive towards your dog will only result in him or her being aggressive to others. Always let you dog know you provide a positive loving environment for him or her.
Another thing that will cause your dog to be aggressive towards people is overly rough-housing with it when it is young. Games like tug o' war, and rough wrestling on the ground are not games that you want to be playing. This is encouraging your dog's aggressiveness and is a definite bad idea. You will be much better served by taking your dog to the park to play fetch or bringing him along for a run. Dogs want to be active, and want to be as big a part of your life as possible, adding them to your workout will definitely show them you want them around.
Let your dog roam free when raising it. A dog that finds itself constantly pent up will always be on the lookout to defend its turf. Your dog wants to be an active member of your family. Dogs are unique just like humans, and you need to be able to understand and adapt to your dogs needs. Above all, show your dog you appreciate them and they will appreciate you.
