The Three Most Important Dog Training Secrets

By Chad Thompson

Dog Training can be fun but also frustrating. Some times they listen, other times they don't. There is a reason, he or she doesn't know the order of the pack in your household. In order to get your dog to listen and behave, follow these three guidelines:

1. Exercise, exercise, exercise. Most dogs misbehave because they have too much energy. Just a simply walk around the block will not work. Dogs need to get out and take a long walk. In their natural habitat, they migrate for miles every day. Add a dog back pack to drain more energy. Remember, tired dogs don't get into trouble and are better able to focus.

2. Establish rules. Many dog owners allow their dogs to jump on them, lick them whenever they want and give treats and affection without the dog earning it. Make sure your dog knows you are in control, you set the rules and the affection and treats only come when they do as they are told. If you want to pet your dog, simply make him sit first. That way they earn the reward. If they get affection and treats without earning it, they will quickly start to demand those things by begging or nudging their nose under your hand which is basically a demand for rub!

3. Be first. In the wild, the pack leaders do everything first. They are the first to eat, first through the entry ways (doors) and get first choice on where they sit or lay down. While this may seem trivial to humans, it's significant to dogs. If they are fed before you sit down to eat, they are the pack leader. Their value is higher. If they are laying in your bed and you come in and don't move them, it raises their value and they will see themselves as the pack leader. Why is this important? Because when you give a command, your dog will think "why should I do what she wants, I'm the leader here!" It's important to understand what pack leadership is and what you can do on a daily basis to remind them you are the leader and not the dog.
