Meet Sassy - Our Little Wonder Dog!

By Judi Bollmeyer

I would like to introduce you to a very special little wonder dog - Sassy, our 9-year-old chihuahua who doesn't possess any super strength of any sort but she does seem to be the most perceptive dog that we've ever known. We have no way of comparing her talents with the rest of the pet population but we do have three dogs and out of all of them, she seems to be the only one that is gifted with what I call her very own form of ESP.

Years ago, we became aware of her ability to know the exact moment before our Cocker Spaniel, Rusty would become sick and vomit on the floor. He evidently had a sensitive stomach and there were times that he would either eat too fast or his food just wouldn't agree with him and he wouldn't be able to keep it down. Somehow she would always know, even if she wasn't anywhere near him. She would come running from wherever she was and whatever she was doing like a little lightning bolt and circle round and round him yipping up a storm. Sometimes, if she was quick enough and we were in the same room we'd be able to get Rusty out the door just in the nick of time to avoid having to clean up a mess on the floor. Since those times, we have switched all of them to a better brand of dog food that is more to their digestive system's liking and that problem has been solved.

Now that Rusty is much older, 16 years of age, he is like any other elderly dog and has a problem with his bladder and holding things in. Sassy's telepathic powers have once again been awakened as she is the one who knows the exact instant before Rusty is about to have an accident on the kitchen floor. I have never seen anything like this before in my life. If I am in another room and suddenly hear Sassy's unique alarm system go off - the yipping, once again - I immediately know to grab the stack of towels on my way to the "scene of the accident" and sure enough will find that she got it right again! I don't know how she does this but I am well aware that she does have these psychic powers.

Could it be that her power to know the future was rare and maybe ran in her family? That, I will never know but there is one more testimony that I would like to share to further convince you that she is indeed, blessed with this special gift. We have a very long driveway and live out in the country. As soon as this little dog hears a vehicle pulling in she immediately knows whether it is a friend or foe. For example, if it happens to be one of our grown children, she will go into a very screeching rendition of letting you know, in her most excited way, that it's someone she's familiar with and likes alot. She will then run around in circles in anticipation of waiting for them to walk through the door. Now, on the other hand, if it's someone she doesn't know you will be very well aware of this simply by the aggressive manner in which she is barking and her stance as she waits at the door to "attack" anyone who tries to cross her path and hurt her family in any way. Of course, she would never hurt anyone but until you actually get through the door you would never know this by the way she chooses to announce the fact that she is the most loyal guard dog in the world.

Now, if this little account of our super-pup has not convinced you that dogs can surely be telepathic and know the future then you should probably meet this little lady in person and then you would have no doubt that she is who she is and we're very proud to call her ours. Yes, Sassy, you have made believers out of us!
