There are lots of things to consider in order to name your dog. First of all the name needs to be practical meaning that you should not name your dog something that resembles or rhymes with commands such as fetch, down or sit. For the same reasons as above your dogs name should differ from that of other members of the household.
The name of the dog should preferably be short, one or two syllables at the most. The shorter and easier the name the faster the dog will respond to the name and understand when its being called upon.
You should also consider that while calling the dog cupcake, precious or darling can be cute when the dog is a puppy it might not have the same appeal when the dog reaches adulthood. Also consider that you need to feel comfortable calling out for your dog in crowded places without feeling completely embarrassed.
Some names might sound cool or funny but end up scaring some people or even worse children. So for obvious reasons you should not call your dog Killer, Slayer or Beast etc. For inspiration you do not need to look very far. Lots of popular names are taken from foods, beverages, snacks, history or other languages. To name a few examples, Othello, Nero, Guinness or Cookie
A good tip would be to wait as long as possible before deciding on a name so that you give the dog the chance to show his or her personality. Having a great dane called Tiny might not be very suitable but then again if you got a sense of humor go for it.
